I was part of one of the first generations of latch-key kids. As long as we didn't have a history of leaving our school bags on the stove or letting strangers into the house, we were pretty much allowed to stay home alone. Now, however, I hear there are more refined processes for determining when kids can stay home. This is one of many reasons why today's kids are going to overtake us by the time they're 20.

Two states actually have laws determining when children can be left home alone. In most other places, you'll have to make that call yourself.
