Levitation Fun with a Giant Scrapyard Electromagnet Posted: 21 Jun 2011 12:43 AM PDT **Update:** Sadly, this looks like a hoax (however, read on anyways for some awesome inspiration) What wouldn’t you do with a giant electromagnet from a scrapyard? These guys bought one on Ebay, brought it into their shop, and used it to levitate objects from 0-7 feet in the air! Check out the column of levitating plastic ball-pit balls in the video below: The lightweight, soft plastic balls were slit open and a coil, battery, and microcontroller per placed inside to dynamically alter the magnetic fields of the balls. Power up the giant magnet, and viola, you have a column of levitating objects! **Update:** Sadly, this looks like a hoax, and the balls were actually rendered in 3D. But! It's something that gets the geeky, imaginative juices flowing along with our other electromagnetism projects. Top Electromagnetic Projects:
